Tommaso Agasisti

Tommaso Agasisti is a full professor in the School of Management at the Polytechnic University of Milan. He conducts research in public sector economics, finance, and management, with a particular focus on the economics and management of education systems. His research can be grouped into four main areas: (i) statistical and econometric methods for assessing the performance and efficiency of public organizations — particularly universities, schools, and governments, (ii) governance models for educational institutions and systems, (iii) public sector finance, and (iv) digital innovation in the public sector.

Tommaso Agasisti earned his PhD in Management, Economics, and Industrial Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Milan and his MA in Economics from the University of Bologna. He is an associate editor of the scientific journal Higher Education Quarterly and a member of the editorial boards of Educational Researcher, Tertiary Education and Management, and the International Journal of Educational Management.

The spread of the COVID-19 pandemic is an unprecedent challenge that caught unprepared the health systems of all countries of the world and, at the same time, is exerting devastating consequences on social, economic and educational systems. It is still too early to measure the extent of this negative impact in increasing inequalities and more generally in worsening the living conditions of a large share of the world population. Some data from pre-COVID periods, however, can help in setting expectations.
